Excel 2010 Power Programming with VBA

This is as much an enthusiastic endorsement of the author as it is a review of this book in particular. I've used probably four or five of Walkenbach's books over the years and they've all been very well done. They contain all the information the Excel user needs, he does a great job of anticipating the readers' questions, and he includes enough humorous observations to make what might otherwise be a boring exercise quite enjoyable. These favorable impressions are all based on using his other titles purely as reference works; i.e., I have a question about an Excel related topic, I look it up and read only what I need to close the book and go back to work.This title, however, is different. I am not a trained programmer, and I don't know enough to "pick a programming topic" and then read only what applies to my question. Thus, I have begun reading on page 1 and will read through to the end, certain that he'll have covered what I need to know. I'm about 20% of the way in so far and am amazed by what I've learned already. I'm even MORE impressed with his ability to communicate to someone like me, with a broad Excel background, but virtually no programming skills. With every page, my confidence grows that I'll soon be enjoying greater productivity, and accolades from co-workers who depend on me to get the most out of the tools they use.When it comes to Excel, John Walkenbach TOTALLY ROCKS... however, I have no idea about whether his banjo playing measures up.

By that I mean the words that Walkenbach uses to explain the various aspects of VBA are "understandable." However, it doeshelp if you've spent some time reading other books on VBA, and Excel for that matter, and then you may be better able to judgefor yourself how he, more often than not, better explains the topic in clear and concise language. The reference has a profuse distribution of examples of VBA code. The text has 31 Chapters, and I am just into Chapter 9 at this time, but I am reading thetext, word for word, line for line, page for page, and performing some of the examples for myself. However, I have most, if notall of Walkenbach's references on Excel and VBA for I personally feel these are great "go-to" references when you need a VBAor Excel question answered (I currently have 7 of his books but may have missed some I have at work, including this same textin the 2007 version). In a few instances, however, I have had to Google. The Appendix is thorough, and the Index is quiteextensive and covers most topics that I could think of, at least at this moment in time. There may be a few not covered, but onemust realize no text is perfect. I probably have 20+ reference texts on VBA. I rank Walkenbach at the top for his overall ability to better explain things, and thus allow me, at least, to "connect the dots." If you want an excellent first or fifth reference on VBA andhave Office 2010, get this text!M. WakelandDallas, TX

I have had this book for a little while and have referenced it from time to time. Lately however, I have been using it a lot and getting some very useful knowledge from it. I am pretty good with excel. I use it daily and have been doing that for many years now. I do a lot of power user type stuff with pivot tables, vba macros, custom programs, integrating with other software and databases. I say this because I feel I have a very good working knowledge with excel and this book has still taught me some very useful things. It has enabled me to streamline a lot of my code and do things more efficiently. I recently delved into working with the Ribbon X portion of Excel to put all of my macros into a neat little tab. This book just touches on it but does enough to give me the building blocks to do more. The examples are very useful (unlike other books I have read) and the author does a good job of giving you examples of why you would want to do something a certain way. Excel can do a TON of stuff and this book does a good job at hitting the important and useful items. There is always more to learn and certain things this book didn't go into as full of detail as I would have liked but even then it is over 1,000 pages. The CD that it comes with has all the examples and those are great to work with to have some boilerplate code to build from. Great book for power users in excel!

While everyone's starting to learn cooler hipper languages, the reality is that VBA in excel is still pretty darn useful.If you have absolutely no experience then VBA for dummies is still - to me - one of the better places to start. The book is not as big and intimidating. However, after you've already written a few programs, this book is fantastic. Great step by step instructions. Lots of examples. Advanced sections are great. It will take me some time before this all becomes old hat for me.If you were looking for something that uses VBA to link to other Microsoft applications. You should be good with this book. It goes into detail on how to interface with outlook, deal with sending emails, interface with Word or PowerPoint.If you need to learn how to interface with databases, this is not the best choice. But there is no reason to believe it would be in the title or table of contents, so you really can't complain.Will it replace the all mighty google. No, but as a supplement, it is excellent and a bit more structured. The explanations are far better than what you'd find on-line. There are tons of random helpful tips and history that - if you're nerdy enough to read the whole book rather than just use the table of contents and index to get to the sections you need - are pretty darn wonderful.Oh, and for people who can't stand the upgrades in the new version of Excel, the author explains that stuff too. One reason to get the newer vs the older version.

John Walkenbach escreve muito bem o livro. Ele é muito didático e dá muitos exemplos. Porém, para usuários que nunca viram programação antes, talvez sintam um pouco de dificuldades e tenha que reler algumas vezes o capítulo. Para estes usuários, recomendo fortemente por em prática alguns exemplos e ve-los acontecer quando forem executados. Para usuários mais avançados, há muita informação útil para preparar o projeto antes de executa-lo, para estrutura-lo de uma maneira tal que não fique havendo muitas mudanças ao longo do caminho.

This is a great book with some very advanced VBA programming techniques for Excel. I've certainly learned a lot from it, very useful!If you're thinking of getting the Kindle version, don't bother - all of the examples are on the cd and some of the projects are ONLY on the cd. You also get a PDF of the ebook on the CD which you can easily convert to a (better formatted) kindle ebook anyway.

John Walkenbach explique vraiment très bien et se met à notre portée dans ce livre vraiment très complet. Dommage qu'il n'existe pas en version française.

As a 30-year user and developer of thousands of spreadsheets, I was surprised at the amount of new and basic information I learned about MS Excel. I bought the book for some VBA insights and tips but ended up with much more. It does assume some basic knowledge and experience with MS Excel but is very well written, cross indexed, and supported with the included CD. I highly recommend the book for those who want to do more with MS Excel, and especially those who want to develop MS Excel-based applications.
